Bhangra Blowout - Indian folk music and dance festival in the U.S.

On March 31st 2001, DAR Constitutional Hall and the George Washington University will be teeming with people ready to experience Bhangra Blowout, the most anticipated South Asian cultural event on the East Coast. Bhangra, a lively form of folk music and dance from Punjab, in Northern India and Pakistan is an art form that can capture the senses and, it is the focus of the annual Bhangra Blowout. In past years, Bhangra BlowoutT has been featured in two of the largest newspapers in North America, the New York Times and Washington Post. This exposure has made the event transform from a local to a national spectacle, bringing thousands of people to the Washington. DC area. Numerous colleges and universities have been represented at this event, including Boston University, Duke University, and the University of Pennsylvania . Past winners have included Harvard University, the University of Texas at Austin, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This year we have schools coming form as far away as Vancouver, Canada and California to compete. The winner of the competition gets the honor of defeating 11 other college teams and taking home a massive trophy and $2,500 after an intense, adrenaline-pumping, high-energy performance that leaves the audience enthralled. Bhangra BlowoutT has also served as a launching pad for several South Asian talents, such as acapella group Penn Masala and rapper Nimo. Capacity crowds have moved the show to the magnificent D.A.R. Constitution Hall. Located a few blocks away from the White House and Washington Monument, this historic hall seats 3,700, and is virtually filled by the sounds of the traditional Indian drum, the dhol, pounding the rhythm into the dancers' performance. Over the years, teams competing in Bhangra Blowout have used a mix of traditional South Asian music and influences from American popular music. Bhangra Blowout will feature an accompanying fair called 'Bhangra on the Quad', taking place the afternoon prior to the competition on the university quadrangle and attracting hundreds of students. The event will showcase South Asian culture, cuisine, music, dance, and fashion with plenty of vendors and activities for everyone. The after show reception has also grown immensely. North America's finest DJ's have spun at these receptions, bringing the burgeoning crowds to frenzy. Needless to say both Bhangra Blowout and the official after-Blowout event have something for everyone, a little bit of tradition, folklore, trend and hype, all of which make it a great testament to the cultural unity in the Nations Capitol, Washington DC. Bhangra BlowoutT represents the opportunity to bring together the South Asian community in the hope of promoting unity and awareness of its culture. The Goal of this years show is to expose not only South Asians to Bhangra, but also others who might not get to experience the fun otherwise. The GW South Asian Society, a student organization, organizes the show every year. In Addition, the group donates show and partial after-party proceeds to various South Asian charities and the GW Scholarship Fund.
